Squirrel Removal in The Woodlands, Texas

Under The Woodlands canopy, a squirrel can reach almost any roof without touching the ground. It jumps from a limb to the shingles, chews a hole at the fascia board or a gable vent, and builds a nest in the attic insulation. Michael Gerbino of Cypress Critters & Pests gets the squirrels out alive with one-way doors or cage traps, closes the holes with metal, and replaces the chewed wood. Call Michael at 713-775-8799.

What do squirrels do to Woodlands houses?

Gray and fox squirrels are everywhere in a forest like this one, and to them a house is one more tree with a hollow inside. They pick a spot where a branch meets the roof, chew until the wood gives, and move in. From then on you hear them on a schedule: running across the ceiling soon after sunrise as they head out to feed, and again in the late afternoon when they come back. Their teeth never stop growing, so they keep chewing once they are inside, on rafters, duct wrap and wiring.

What to look for from the yard and the driveway:

  • A squirrel taking the same limb to the same corner of the roof, day after day
  • Fresh, pale wood showing at a chewed fascia corner or the edge of a roof vent
  • Scratching in the eave above a bedroom in the early morning
  • Bits of chewed vent screen or wood on the patio or the top of the gutter
  • Leaves and shredded material poking out of a gap at the roof edge

Squirrels can raise young twice a year, so in late winter, spring and late summer there is a good chance a nest is up there.

Why does trapping squirrels not work on its own under all these trees?

Remove two squirrels from an attic in The Woodlands, and two more are sitting in the oak next door. The chewed hole and the smell of the old nest lead them straight back in, sometimes within days. The only thing that breaks that cycle is closing the house with material squirrels cannot chew, which is the whole idea behind Michael’s animal exclusion and live trapping work. The animal exclusion in The Woodlands page explains how he keeps that metal work neat on a house with covenant rules.

How Michael gets squirrels out for good

  1. Inspect. He walks the whole roofline and checks the attic for nests, chewed wiring and second entry holes. Squirrels rarely stop at one.
  2. Get them out alive. A one-way door over the main hole lets them leave and not return. Cage traps cover spots where a door will not fit. Squirrels caught alive are removed and handled following Texas rules.
  3. Check the nest. No final hole is closed while young are still inside.
  4. Seal and rebuild. Hardware cloth behind the vents, metal flashing at the roof edge, and new fascia or soffit wood where the old pieces were chewed through.
  5. Point out the bridges. He shows you which limbs the squirrels use so you can have them trimmed.

Questions people ask about squirrels in The Woodlands

Why are squirrels such a problem for Woodlands roofs?

Because the trees come right up to the houses. Most roofs in The Woodlands have a limb or two lying on the shingles or hanging just over them, which gives squirrels a direct path to the roof edge. Once there, they chew into soft wood and plastic vents. A neighborhood with this much canopy simply has more squirrels looking for a place to nest.

Can Michael replace the fascia board the squirrels chewed?

Yes. Rebuilding chewed fascia and soffit pieces is part of the job. A patch over chewed wood just gives the squirrels a new place to start, so Michael replaces the damaged section and backs the gap with metal flashing. He tells you after the inspection which pieces need replacing, so you know what the work involves before it starts.

When is the right time of year to seal squirrels out?

Any time, as long as the nest is checked first. Squirrels can have young in late winter into spring and again in late summer. If the mother is shut out while her young are inside, she chews a new hole to reach them and the young die in the attic. Michael confirms the nest is empty before the last opening is closed.

Will trimming my Woodlands trees keep squirrels off the roof?

It helps, but it is not enough by itself. Squirrels jump well and climb brick, downspouts and siding, so a trimmed tree slows them down without stopping them. In The Woodlands, where canopy is everywhere, trimming works well alongside sealed openings. Michael points out which limbs are being used so you can decide what to cut back.
