Rat and Mouse Control in Cypress, Texas

Rat and mouse control in Cypress comes down to two jobs: catching the rodents already inside and closing every gap they use to get in. Michael Gerbino of Cypress Critters & Pests does both himself. He traps the rats and mice in the attic, walls or garage, then seals openings a quarter inch and larger with hardware cloth and metal so new ones cannot follow. Call Michael at 713-775-8799 if you hear scratching after dark or find droppings.

Where do rats and mice live around Cypress houses?

Cypress gives rodents plenty of cover. In the master-planned subdivisions, long runs of wooden privacy fence connect one backyard to the next, and roof rats travel the top rail from yard to yard after dark. Where a subdivision backs up to woods or the Cypress Creek corridor, they have a protected place to nest a short run from the house. On the older acreage lots, sheds, barns, feed and woodpiles keep them fed and hidden all year.

Setting in Cypress Where the rodents stay How they reach the house
Subdivision backyard Thick shrubs, stacked items along the fence, bird seed under a feeder Along the top of the fence, then up a tree limb or downspout to the roof
Lot backing to woods or the creek Brush and fallen limbs at the woods edge Across the yard at night to the garage or the foundation
Older acreage lot Sheds, barns, feed storage and woodpiles From the outbuilding to the house, often through crawl-space vents or loose skirting
Any house with a garage Pet food, stored boxes, the back corners Under worn rubber at the garage door corners

Once inside, roof rats nest in the attic insulation and use the wall cavities as hallways. Mice usually stay lower, in the garage, pantry and kitchen.

How Michael handles rats here

Michael starts outside. He walks the roofline, the vents, the AC line openings, the garage and the foundation, then reads the attic for droppings, runways and rub marks. That tells him which openings are active. Traps go on those runways, out of reach of pets and children. Then every gap a quarter inch and up is sealed with hardware cloth, galvanized mesh or metal flashing. Foam is not used as a seal, because rats chew right through it. Once the house is closed, he checks the traps again to make sure the activity has stopped. The full method is on the rat and mouse control page.

Setting traps without sealing only catches this month’s rats. The openings stay and new rats arrive by smell, which is why the work on the animal exclusion and live trapping page is the real fix.

Questions people ask about rats and mice in Cypress

Are the rats coming over from my neighbor’s yard in Cypress?

They may be. In Cypress subdivisions the wooden fences connect yard to yard, and roof rats use the top rail like a road. Rats that nest a few houses away can reach your roof in one night. That is why Michael focuses on sealing your house, since he cannot control what the neighbors have.

Do newer homes in Cypress get roof rats too?

Yes. A newer house can still have small gaps at roof corners, vent screens and where the AC lines enter the wall, and a quarter inch is all a mouse needs. Subdivisions next to woods or open land also have rodents close by from the start. Age of the house matters less than whether the gaps are closed.

Can rats get from the attic down into the walls?

They can. Wall cavities open into the attic at the top, and roof rats use them to travel down toward the kitchen, bathrooms and the warm space behind appliances. Scratching low in a wall at night is often a rat on its way somewhere. Sealing the outside openings cuts off the supply, and trapping clears the ones already in.

What can I do around the yard to help?

Pick up pet food at night, keep bird seed off the ground, store firewood away from the house and keep stacked items off the fence line. Trim tree limbs back from the roof. None of that replaces sealing the house, but it gives rodents fewer reasons to stay near it once the openings are closed.
