Rat and Mouse Control in Spring, Texas

Rats and mice in a Spring home are a job Michael Gerbino of Cypress Critters & Pests handles from start to finish. He tracks down how they are getting in, traps the ones already inside, and closes every gap they can fit through with metal and hardware cloth so new ones cannot follow. He is based in Spring and does the work himself. Call Michael at 713-775-8799.

How do rats get into Spring houses?

In Spring the usual animal in the attic is the roof rat, a climber that lives up off the ground. The town’s mature trees give it a road through the canopy. A roof rat can leave a backyard oak, run along a fence rail, cross onto a limb above the next house and drop onto the shingles without ever touching the grass. Streets with big old trees close to the roof see the most of this, and once one house on the block has rats, its neighbors are a short run away.

Mice work lower. They slip in at garage door corners, gaps along the foundation and the opening where the A/C lines enter the wall. In the older houses around Old Town Spring, crawl spaces and aged trim leave more of those low gaps than a newer slab house usually has.

These are the openings Michael finds most on Spring rodent jobs, and how each one gets closed.

Gap Where on a Spring house How it gets closed
Roof-to-fascia gap under an overhanging limb Roof edge Metal flashing and repaired fascia
Gable vent screen Upper wall at the roof peak Heavy hardware cloth behind the louvers
A/C line chase Side wall beside the outdoor unit Hardware cloth with rodent-resistant sealant, never foam by itself
Plumbing vent collars Roof Metal collars or mesh around each pipe
Garage door bottom corners Garage New seals with metal corner guards
Crawl-space vents Foundation of raised houses Galvanized mesh over each vent

How Michael handles it here

He starts outside, walking the roofline, vents, A/C chase, garage and foundation, then goes into the attic to read the droppings, rub marks and tunnels in the insulation. That shows him which routes are active. Snap traps go on those runways, set where kids and pets cannot get to them, and Michael checks them on a schedule.

Poison bait is not the answer here. It leaves the hole open, and a poisoned rat often dies inside a wall where nobody can reach it. Trapping alone has the same flaw: it clears out today’s rats while the next ones walk in the same gap. The fix is sealing every opening, which is the core of Michael’s animal exclusion and live trapping service. After sealing, he keeps checking until the activity stops, then cleans up droppings and soiled insulation. The full approach is on the rat and mouse control page.

Michael does the same rodent work in The Woodlands to the north and in Klein. In Spring, rats tend to bring other trouble. Snakes follow them into garages and flower beds, which is covered on snake removal in Spring. If the running happens in daylight instead, it is more likely squirrels, covered on squirrel removal in Spring. All Spring services are on the Spring, Texas page.

What goes into the quote?

A rodent job is quoted after Michael has seen the house, because every house has its own set of gaps. What shapes it: how many entry points there are and how high they sit, whether the house is slab or pier-and-beam, how long the rats have been there, and how much insulation and trim needs clean-up or repair. Questions people ask about rat and mouse control in Spring

Why do roof rats keep coming back to my Spring house?

Because the way in is still open. Roof rats in Spring travel the trees and fence lines between yards, and they find an attic by the smell of the rats that lived there before. Trapping clears the ones inside, but new ones keep arriving until every gap at the roof edge, vents and A/C chase is sealed with metal or hardware cloth.

Do the big trees in my Spring yard bring rats onto the roof?

They often do. Limbs that touch or hang over the shingles give roof rats a path from the tree straight to the roof edge. Trimming them back helps, but rats also climb downspouts, brick and fences, so trimming alone does not keep them out. Michael points out which limbs are being used and seals the openings they lead to.

Is spray foam enough to plug the holes rats use?

No. Rats chew through spray foam with little effort, and foam around an A/C line or pipe is one of the most common failed patches Michael finds. Openings need hardware cloth, galvanized mesh or metal flashing, with sealant used only as a finish over the metal. That is what keeps teeth from getting back through.

How does Michael know the rats are really gone?

He keeps checking after the house is sealed. Empty traps, no fresh droppings, no new rub marks and a quiet ceiling at night are the signs he looks for. When the activity has stopped, he cleans out the old droppings and soiled insulation so the attic no longer smells like a place rats have lived.
