Squirrel Removal in Houston, Texas

Squirrels running across a north Houston ceiling in the early morning are a job for Cypress Critters & Pests. Michael Gerbino gets them out alive with a one-way door or a cage trap, covers every chewed hole with metal, and replaces the damaged trim. He works the FM 1960 area, Champions, Willowbrook and the Cypress Fairbanks side. To have the roof checked, call 713-775-8799.

Why do squirrels pick older Houston houses?

Older neighborhoods on the north side have had time to grow tall trees, and those trees often reach right over the roof. To a squirrel, a limb that touches the shingles is a bridge from its nest to your attic. The house helps too. Fascia boards that have softened in the humidity are easy to chew, and the corners of the gable vents on an older house are often the first thing to give.

Here is what that tends to look like from the ground:

  • A round, chewed hole at the corner of the fascia or the edge of a gable vent.
  • Squirrels running the same limb or power line to the same spot on the roof every morning.
  • Bits of chewed wood or vent screen on the driveway or in the gutter.
  • Noise over the bedroom ceiling soon after sunrise, then again in the late afternoon.

Inside, squirrels shred insulation into nests and gnaw on whatever is in reach, wiring included. In a house with older wiring, that is worth having an electrician look at once the squirrels are out.

How Michael handles it here

He inspects the whole roofline, because one hole in plain sight often has a second one hidden behind a gutter or a tree. A one-way door goes on the main entry so the squirrels can leave and not return, and cage traps are used where a door will not fit. Before the last opening is closed, he checks for young, since a mother shut out will chew a new hole right beside the old one. Texas Parks and Wildlife Code lists gray and fox squirrels as game animals, and the squirrels are removed alive and handled following Texas rules.

Taking the squirrels out does not stop the next ones from following the same limb to the same hole. Closing the openings with hardware cloth and metal flashing does, and that sealing step is the center of animal exclusion and live trapping. The main squirrel removal page explains one-way doors and the two litters squirrels can raise in a year.

What goes into the quote?

Michael quotes once he has been on the roof. A single chewed vent is a small job. A two-story house with holes on three sides, soft fascia that needs replacing and several vents to cover takes more. He explains what each part is for before any work starts.

Questions people ask about squirrel removal in Houston

How do squirrels get onto my Houston roof without a tree nearby?

Squirrels are strong climbers and jumpers. Power lines, cable lines, brick corners and downspouts all give them a way up, and they can leap several feet from a fence or a neighbor’s tree. Cutting back limbs helps, but it rarely keeps them off the roof completely. That is why Michael relies on sealing the openings rather than trying to block every route up.

Why does the squirrel hole in my fascia keep getting bigger?

Squirrels chew to keep their teeth from overgrowing, and they work at the edges of an opening every time they pass through. Soft, weathered fascia on an older house gives way quickly, so a small gap can grow into a hole the size of a fist. Michael replaces the soft wood and covers the spot with metal they cannot chew.

Can squirrels be removed from a Houston attic without hurting them?

Yes. In most north Houston attics Michael uses a one-way door, a short metal tunnel over the entry that lets squirrels out but not back in. Cage traps cover the spots where a door will not fit. No poison is involved. Once the attic is clear and no young are left inside, the hole is sealed for good.

Should I patch the squirrel hole myself once they leave?

It is better to wait until you know they are all out, young included. Patching a hole with squirrels still inside traps them, and they either chew a new way out or die in the attic. A patch made of wood, foam or screen also tends to get chewed through. Michael confirms the attic is empty first, then seals it with metal.
