Squirrel Removal in Klein, Texas

Squirrels in a Klein attic come out through a one-way door or a live cage trap, and then every hole they chewed is closed with metal so they cannot chew back in. Michael Gerbino of Cypress Critters & Pests does the roof inspection, the removal and the repair himself, and he checks for a nest of young before the last hole is sealed. Call Michael at 713-775-8799 if you hear running overhead in the morning or late afternoon.

What are squirrels doing on Klein roofs?

Klein’s established neighborhoods are full of mature trees, and mature trees mean squirrels. Their whole day is spent in the canopy, and when a limb grows out over a roof, the roof becomes part of their territory. From there, they look for a soft spot.

On an older house they find one quickly. The corner of a fascia board that has softened with age, the thin screen behind a gable vent, a plastic roof vent that has gone brittle in the sun: a squirrel’s front teeth grow all its life, and chewing through any of those takes it very little time. The giveaway from the yard is a round, clean-edged hole near the roof edge, and a squirrel going in and out of it on a regular schedule.

Inside, squirrels pull insulation into a nest, store nuts and acorns, and chew. Chewed wiring is the damage that matters most, because nobody sees it until something stops working.

Why do patched holes fail on older roofs?

A lot of homeowners have already tried a patch by the time they call. It usually fails for one of these reasons:

  • The patch was wood, screen or foam. Squirrels chew through all three. Only metal holds.
  • Only one hole was closed. Squirrels that are locked out simply chew the next weak spot, often a foot away.
  • The squirrels were still inside. A squirrel sealed in chews its way out, and a mother sealed out chews back in to reach her young.
  • The wood around the hole was soft. A cover fastened to rotten fascia pulls loose. The damaged piece has to be replaced first.

How Michael handles it here

He walks the whole roofline, not just the hole you have seen, and goes into the attic to find the nest and any chewed wiring. A one-way door goes on the main entry so the squirrels can leave but cannot return; cage traps are used where a door will not fit. Texas Parks and Wildlife Code lists gray and fox squirrels as game animals, and any squirrel Michael catches is removed alive and handled following Texas rules.

Getting squirrels out does nothing on its own if the roof stays open, because the next squirrels in the trees find the old nest by scent. So Michael replaces the chewed wood and closes each opening with hardware cloth, metal flashing or a heavy vent cover, which is the sealing work behind his animal exclusion service. The main squirrel removal page has more on how squirrels behave.

Questions people ask about squirrels in Klein

Why are there so many squirrels on my Klein street?

Trees. Klein’s established, wooded neighborhoods give squirrels food, nesting spots and limbs to travel on, so plenty of them live here. That alone is not a problem. It turns into one when a limb reaches the roof and the house has a weak spot at the roof edge or a vent. Sealing those openings matters more here than in a neighborhood with few trees.

Should I have the limbs over my Klein roof trimmed?

It helps, and Michael will point out which limbs the squirrels are using. Cutting them back a few feet from the roof takes away the easiest route. It will not keep squirrels off by itself, because they also climb brick, downspouts and utility lines, so trimming pays off when it goes together with sealing the openings in metal.

How long does a one-way door stay on the roof?

Until the squirrels are out. The door lets each squirrel leave to feed, and it cannot get back in. Once Michael sees no more activity and has checked that no young are left in the nest, the door comes off and the hole is closed with metal. How long that takes depends on the house and how many squirrels were inside.

Do squirrels damage anything besides the hole they chew?

Yes. Inside the attic they shred insulation for nests, leave droppings and food stores, and chew on wiring and the paper facing of insulation batts. Michael looks for chewed wires during the inspection and tells you if an electrician should see anything. He replaces the chewed fascia or soffit and cleans out the nest as part of the work.
