Squirrel Removal in Cypress, Texas
When squirrels are running and chewing in a Cypress attic, Michael Gerbino of Cypress Critters & Pests gets them out alive with one-way doors and cage traps, closes every hole with hardware cloth and metal, and replaces the chewed wood. He does the work himself, from the roof to the attic. Texas Parks and Wildlife Code lists gray and fox squirrels as game animals, so the squirrels are removed alive and handled following Texas rules. Call Michael at 713-775-8799 to have the roofline checked.
Why do squirrels get into Cypress attics?
Cypress has two very different kinds of lots, and squirrels do well on both. The older acreage lots have big, mature trees whose limbs reach over the roof, which gives a squirrel a bridge straight to the shingles. The newer master-planned subdivisions have younger trees, but many of those streets back up to the woods along Cypress Creek or wooded strips between neighborhoods, so squirrels are only a fence away.
| Kind of lot | How the squirrel gets to the roof | Where it usually chews in |
|---|---|---|
| Older acreage lot with big trees | Runs out a limb that hangs over or touches the roof | Fascia boards and soffits under the branches |
| Newer subdivision backing to woods | Crosses the fence and climbs a downspout, brick corner or young tree | Gable vent screens and roof returns on two-story houses |
| Any street with power lines | Runs the line to the house | The roof edge closest to where the line reaches the house |
The sign most people notice is noise in daylight, early in the morning and late in the afternoon, when squirrels leave and come back. A round, chewed hole at a fascia corner is the other clue.
How Michael handles squirrels here
Michael walks the whole roofline, not only the hole you saw, because squirrels often open more than one. In the attic he looks for nests, chewed wiring and travel paths. A one-way door goes on the main hole so the squirrels can leave and cannot get back, and cage traps are used where a door will not fit. Before the last opening is closed he checks for young, since a mother shut out will chew right back in to reach them. Then each hole is sealed with hardware cloth or metal flashing, and chewed fascia and soffit pieces are replaced. On acreage lots he points out the limbs that need trimming. The full method is on the squirrel removal and exclusion page.
Trapping a few squirrels without sealing the roof only makes room for the next ones from the trees out back. Closing every opening, the work on the animal exclusion and live trapping page, is what keeps the attic quiet.

Questions people ask about squirrels in Cypress
Why are squirrels getting into my newer Cypress house?
Many newer Cypress streets back up to woods, so squirrels are close by, and new houses often have soft spots at gable vent screens and roof returns. A squirrel can chew through a vent screen or open a loose corner in an afternoon. The age of the house matters less than whether those spots have been closed with metal.
Do the big trees on my Cypress acreage lot cause squirrel problems?
They make it easier. Limbs that hang over or touch the roof give squirrels a direct path to the roof edge. Trimming them back helps, though squirrels can still jump and climb, so the openings need sealing too. Michael points out which limbs are being used when he walks the outside of the house.
How can I tell squirrel damage from raccoon damage?
Squirrels chew a fairly neat, round hole a few inches across at a fascia corner or vent, and you hear them in daylight. Raccoons pull and tear, leaving a ripped soffit panel or a vent pushed in, and you hear them at night. Michael confirms which animal it is by looking at the opening and the attic.
Can I just close the hole while the squirrels are out?
It usually backfires. Squirrels often have young inside, and other squirrels may still be in the attic. Shut out, they chew a new hole next to the patch, and any left inside can die there. A one-way door lets them all leave first, and then the hole is sealed with metal they cannot chew through.
