Animal Exclusion in Houston, Texas

For animal exclusion on the north and northwest side of Houston, the call goes to Cypress Critters & Pests. Exclusion means closing every opening an animal can use to get into a house or building, once any animal inside has been caught alive. Michael Gerbino finds the gaps, seals them with metal and hardware cloth, and repairs the damaged wood around them. He works homes and small commercial buildings from the FM 1960 area to Willowbrook. Reach Michael at 713-775-8799.

Where do animals get into north Houston buildings?

Most openings Michael finds in this part of Houston fall into a handful of groups. Older houses tend to have the first three. Small commercial buildings tend to have the last two.

Spot What goes wrong Who uses it
Fascia and roof edge The wood dries, shrinks and pulls away from the roof deck Squirrels, roof rats
Old patches Foam, tape or scrap wood from an earlier repair gets chewed out Rats, squirrels
Gable and foundation vents Screens rust, sag or tear loose from the frame Raccoons up high, rats and snakes down low
Rooftop unit curbs Gaps where the air conditioning unit, conduit and drain lines pass through the roof Roof rats
Back doors and dock doors Worn sweeps and open corners at the bottom of the door Rats, mice, snakes

Michael checks all of them on every visit, not only the one hole the owner noticed, because an animal that loses one door goes looking for the next weakest spot.

Why does sealing matter more near the bayous?

A trap solves this week. In a neighborhood that backs up to a bayou, though, the supply of raccoons, rats and opossums never runs out, and each one follows the scent of the animal that came before it. If the opening stays open, the attic fills again. Exclusion breaks that cycle by taking away the way in, and it is the reason Michael builds every job around the method laid out on the main animal exclusion and live trapping page.

How Michael handles it here

  1. Walk the whole building. Roofline, attic, crawl space or slab edge, and on a commercial building the roof itself around each unit.
  2. Get the animals out first. Cage traps or one-way doors clear what is inside, and any young are found before anything is closed. Every animal caught this way is removed alive and handled following Texas rules.
  3. Seal with metal. Hardware cloth, galvanized mesh and flashing go over every gap, fastened so they cannot be pried off. Foam is never the final fix.
  4. Repair the wood. Rotted or chewed fascia and soffit pieces are replaced before the seal goes on, so the metal has something solid to hold.
  5. Check the work. A follow-up visit confirms nothing is still trying to get back in.

What goes into the quote?

An exclusion quote comes straight from the inspection. Michael counts the openings, notes how high each one sits, and works out how much wood has to be replaced before anything can be sealed. A flat commercial roof with three units is figured differently from a two-story house with a steep pitch. He goes through each item so you know what the work covers.

Nearby

The same work in neighboring towns is described on the Cypress exclusion page and the Klein exclusion page. In Houston, exclusion usually follows a raccoon removal or a rat and mouse job. The Houston area page lists everything Michael does in the city, and the contact page takes a written request. To talk it through, call Michael at 713-775-8799.

Questions people ask about animal exclusion in Houston

What is the difference between exclusion and just trapping?

Trapping removes the animal that is inside today. Exclusion closes the openings so no other animal can take its place. Michael does both, in that order: he clears the building first, makes sure no young are left behind, and then seals every gap with metal. Trapping without sealing usually means another call a few weeks later.

Can exclusion work on an older house in north Houston?

Yes, and older houses are often where it matters most. Their trim, vents and roof edges have had more time to loosen and crack. Michael replaces wood that is too soft to hold a fastener, then seals over solid material. A house in the FM 1960 area or Champions with its original vents can be closed up as tightly as a new one.

Will the metal patches change how my house looks?

Michael fits the mesh and flashing to the shape of the roofline and keeps it as low as the spot allows. Most of it sits behind vent louvers, under the eaves or on the back side of the roof, where it is hard to see from the street. Where a patch will show, he points it out before the work starts so nothing comes as a surprise.

Do Houston strip centers need exclusion as well as homes?

They do, and the roof is usually where the trouble starts. Gaps around rooftop air conditioning curbs, conduit and drain lines let roof rats into the ceiling space of a shop or restaurant. Worn sweeps on back doors let mice in at ground level. Michael seals both ends of the building so the problem does not move from one storefront to the next.
