Rat and Mouse Control in Klein, Texas
For rats or mice in a Klein house, Michael Gerbino of Cypress Critters & Pests traps the ones already inside and then closes the gaps they use, down to about a quarter inch, so new ones cannot replace them. He does the inspection and the sealing himself and cleans up the droppings and soiled insulation they leave. Call Michael at 713-775-8799 if you are hearing scratching in the ceiling or walls after dark.
Why do roof rats do so well in Klein neighborhoods?
Roof rats are climbers. They like to live high and travel off the ground, and established Klein neighborhoods hand them a full road system: wooden fence rails, utility lines, and big trees whose limbs reach over the roof. A rat can go from a backyard woodpile to a shingle without touching grass.
The houses add the last piece. On a home that has stood for many years, the foam around the A/C lines has shrunk, the weather seal on the garage door has cracked at the corners, and the soffit seams have opened a little. A rat only needs a gap about as wide as your thumb. Mice need even less. Inside, they nest in the attic insulation and use the wall cavities as hallways down to the kitchen and garage.
What signs tell Michael which rodent it is?
| What you find | What it usually tells him |
|---|---|
| Running and scratching overhead starting around dusk | Roof rats leaving the nest for the night |
| Droppings the size of a raisin on the attic floor | Rats; mouse droppings are much smaller, like grains of rice |
| Dark, greasy smudges on rafters and along a wall plate | A route rats have used long enough to stain the wood |
| Chewed bags in the pantry or the garage | Mice, or rats coming down the walls to feed |
| Gnawing near an outlet or a light that started flickering | Rodents chewing wiring inside the wall or attic |
| A snake near the garage or the back fence | Something is feeding it, and it is often rodents |
How Michael handles it here
He walks the outside first: fence lines, limbs over the roof, the soffits, the vents, the A/C chase, the dryer vent and the garage door. Then he goes into the attic to read the droppings, tunnels and rub marks, which show him how many routes are active. Traps go along those runways, out of reach of pets and children, and get checked on a schedule.
Trapping by itself never ends a rodent problem. Rats breed quickly, and the open gaps keep inviting the next group. Poison bait has the same weakness, and it adds the chance of a rat dying inside a wall. So Michael closes every gap with hardware cloth, galvanized mesh, metal flashing or rodent-resistant sealant, which is the core of his animal exclusion service. Foam alone is not used, because rats chew through it. The main rat and mouse control page covers the rest.

Rodent work in neighboring towns is written up under rat and mouse control in Spring and rat and mouse control in Tomball. In Klein, rodents often lead to two other calls: snake removal, since snakes hunt rats, and squirrel removal, since squirrels use the same roof gaps. Questions people ask about rats and mice in Klein
Are roof rats common in Klein attics?
They are a common attic animal in wooded neighborhoods like the ones in Klein. Wooded lots, fence lines and limbs over the roof give roof rats an easy climb, and older soffits and vent screens give them a way in. Hearing quick scratching overhead after sunset is the usual first sign. An inspection confirms it from the droppings and the travel marks in the attic.
I trapped a few rats. Why are there still more?
Because the openings they used are still there. Rats breed quickly, and others in the neighborhood find the same gaps by smell. Each one you catch is replaced. Michael traps what is inside and then seals the gaps a quarter inch and larger with metal and mesh, which is the step that stops new rats from arriving.
Can mice get into a Klein house through the garage?
Very often, yes. The rubber seal at the bottom of a garage door cracks at the corners with age, and a mouse slips through a gap about a quarter inch wide. From the garage they follow pipes and wiring into the walls and kitchen. Michael checks the door corners, the weather strip and the wall where the garage meets the house on every Klein job.
Should I clean up rat droppings before the inspection?
It is better to leave them where they are. Sweeping or vacuuming dry droppings stirs up dust, and the droppings also show Michael where the rats travel and how active they are. Keep food in sealed containers and pet food put away at night. Clean-up of the attic droppings and soiled insulation is part of the job once the rodents are out.
