Opossum Removal in Spring, Texas
An opossum under a Spring deck, shed or crawl space is usually one slow, quiet animal that found a dry place to sleep. Michael Gerbino of Cypress Critters & Pests handles opossum removal in Spring himself: he catches the opossum alive in a cage trap, makes sure no young are left behind, and closes the space with buried mesh so another one cannot move in. Call Michael at 713-775-8799.
Why do opossums settle under Spring houses?
Spring Creek and its greenway give opossums a long strip of cover that runs right behind many neighborhoods. At night they walk the fence lines into backyards looking for pet food, fallen fruit, compost and grubs. By morning they want somewhere dark and dry to sleep, and a gap under a deck, a shed with a washed-out corner or the crawl space of an older house near Old Town Spring is exactly that. Once one finds a good spot, it may use it for weeks.
What are the signs of an opossum at a Spring home?
- A worn path under the deck. Packed dirt or a pushed-out piece of lattice at one corner.
- Pet food gone overnight. Bowls on the patio or in the garage emptied by morning.
- Tipped trash and dug-up beds. Opossums dig shallow holes for grubs and pull open bags.
- A musky smell near a crawl-space vent. Strongest on warm, damp days.
- The dog going wild at one spot after dark. Often the first clue people notice.
How Michael handles it in Spring
He walks the deck, shed, foundation and garage to find where the animal goes in and to confirm it is an opossum and not a skunk or rats. A cage trap goes on the path it uses and is checked often. The opossum is removed alive and handled following Texas rules. In spring, a mother may be carrying young in her pouch or on her back, so Michael makes sure the space is empty before he closes it.
Then the space is sealed. Galvanized mesh is run from the deck or skirting edge down into the soil and bent outward in an L, so a digging animal hits wire and gives up. Broken crawl-space vents get metal screens. That sealing is the part that keeps the next opossum out, and it is explained on the animal exclusion in Spring page.

What goes into the quote?
Michael gives a number after he has seen the place. It depends on how many openings there are around the deck, shed or foundation, how long a run of deck edge or skirting needs buried mesh, whether crawl-space vents need new screens and whether more than one animal is living there.
Questions people ask about opossums in Spring
Is an opossum under my Spring deck dangerous?
Opossums are shy and slow and would rather hide or play dead than fight. A cornered one will hiss and show a mouth full of teeth, so do not reach for it or let a dog corner it. The bigger trouble is the mess, the smell and the open space it holds for the next animal. Michael removes it and closes the space.
Why does an opossum keep coming into my Spring garage?
Something keeps paying off: pet food, bird seed, trash or a warm corner to sleep in. Opossums remember an easy meal. Bring food in at night, keep the garage door down and fix a worn bottom seal. If one has already moved in, Michael catches it alive and shows you how it is getting in.
Is the opossum dead or playing dead?
A frightened opossum can go limp, lie on its side and stay still for a long time, and it may even smell dead. Leave it alone and keep pets inside, and it will usually get up and wander off once things are quiet. If it is still there hours later, call Michael to check.
Can an opossum get into my Spring attic?
It can, through a torn soffit or a gap where a low roof meets the house, but most opossums live low, under decks, sheds and houses. Fast, light scratching overhead at night is much more often roof rats, and heavy thumping is more often a raccoon. Michael checks the signs before he decides what it is.
How do you keep opossums from digging back under a deck?
Michael runs galvanized wire mesh down from the deck or skirting edge and bends it outward in an L under the soil. An animal that digs at the edge hits the buried mesh and stops. It is the same method that keeps skunks out, and it works on sheds and porches as well as decks.
What should I do if I see a mother opossum with babies?
Leave her alone and keep pets away. The young ride in her pouch or on her back, and she moves slowly with them. If she is living under your deck or in the garage, call Michael. He makes sure the mother and young are all out before any opening is closed, so nothing is sealed inside.
Keep Opossums Out for Good
