Raccoon Removal in Cypress, Texas

For a raccoon in a Cypress attic, chimney or soffit, Michael Gerbino of Cypress Critters & Pests does the work himself. He finds how it got in, catches it alive in a cage trap or lets it out through a one-way door, then seals the opening and repairs what it tore up. Raccoons he catches are removed alive and handled following Texas rules. Call Michael at 713-775-8799 if you hear heavy walking over the ceiling at night.

Why do raccoons pick Cypress houses?

Cypress Creek runs through the town with woods along its banks, and wooded strips still sit between many of the subdivisions. Raccoons live in those woods and travel them at night the way people use a street. When the woods end at a row of back fences, the raccoon keeps going. It finds trash cans, pet food left on a patio and, sooner or later, a weak spot on a roof that looks like a good place to sleep.

The newer two-story houses in Cypress have a lot of roof corners, and each corner is a place where trim can be loose. On the older acreage lots, big trees reach over the roof and give a raccoon an easy climb. Either way, the trip usually looks like this:

  1. The raccoon leaves the creek woods or a wooded lot after dark.
  2. It walks a fence line or crosses a yard to the house.
  3. It climbs a tree, a downspout or a porch post to reach the roof.
  4. It works at a soffit corner, a gable vent or an uncapped chimney until it opens.
  5. In spring, a mother uses that opening to raise her young in the attic or the flue.

Do not go up and try to corner a raccoon, and keep children and pets away from the droppings it leaves.

How Michael handles a raccoon here

Michael inspects the roofline and the attic first, so he knows every opening the raccoon uses and every weak spot it could use next. Cage traps go where it travels, or a one-way door goes over the main entry so it can leave and not return. In spring he checks for young before anything is closed, so the whole family comes out together. Then each opening is sealed with heavy galvanized mesh, metal flashing or a chimney cap, and torn soffits and soiled insulation are taken care of. The full method is on the raccoon removal and exclusion page.

Trapping one raccoon does not end it. The hole stays open and the attic still smells like a den, so the next raccoon from the creek woods finds the same spot. That is why the sealing work on the animal exclusion and live trapping page is part of every raccoon job.

Questions people ask about raccoon removal in Cypress

Are the raccoons in my Cypress attic coming from the creek?

Often they are. Raccoons live in the woods along Cypress Creek and in wooded strips between neighborhoods, and they travel out at night to find food and a den. A house near those woods sees them first. Where the raccoon came from matters less than how it got in, which is what Michael finds during the inspection.

What happens to a raccoon Michael catches in Cypress?

It is caught alive in a cage trap or let out through a one-way door, then removed alive and handled following Texas rules for raccoons. No poison is used. The part that protects your house comes next: sealing the opening it used so another raccoon cannot move into the same spot.

Can a raccoon in my attic damage the air ducts?

It can. Raccoons walk on and tear the wrapped ducts that run through many attics, and a torn duct can blow cooled air into the attic instead of the house. They also flatten insulation and pick a corner for droppings. Michael looks at the ducts during the inspection and tells you what he sees.

Why does a raccoon keep tipping over my trash cans?

Trash and pet food are easy meals, and a raccoon that finds them comes back every night. A yard raccoon is not always an attic raccoon, but it is close. Keep lids tight and pet food inside, and have the roofline checked so the raccoon that is eating in the yard does not move into the house.

Will a raccoon in my Cypress attic leave on its own?

Sometimes it moves on for a while, but an attic with an open hole stays an easy den, and that raccoon or another one usually comes back. In spring a mother may stay until her young can travel. Michael gets the raccoon and any young out alive, then seals the opening so the attic stays closed.

How do raccoons get onto a Cypress roof?

They climb downspouts, corner trim, fences and trees, and some step across from a patio cover or a lower roof. Once on top, they pull open soffits at the corners, push in roof vents or go down an uncapped chimney. Michael checks all of those spots, then seals the openings with metal and fits a chimney cap where one is missing.
