The Woodlands, Texas

In The Woodlands, most wildlife calls start with a tree. Branches reach over roofs, greenbelts run behind back fences, and raccoons, squirrels, roof rats and snakes use both to reach the house. Michael Gerbino of Cypress Critters & Pests inspects the house himself, gets the animal out alive or removes it, seals every opening it could use and repairs the damage. He works all over The Woodlands, on the Montgomery County side and the part that reaches into Harris County. Call Michael at 713-775-8799.

Why do animals get into Woodlands houses so often?

The Woodlands was planned to keep its trees. Houses sit inside the forest instead of on cleared lots, and many back onto a wooded greenbelt. That is what people move here for, and it is also why the wildlife lives so close. A raccoon or squirrel in the woods behind your fence does not have far to travel. It climbs a pine or an oak, walks out on a limb that rests on the shingles and starts working on the roof edge. Roof rats run the same branches after dark. Snakes come in low, through leaf litter and planting beds along the foundation.

The covenants that keep the community looking the way it does matter here too. Changes to the outside of a house are watched closely, so a patch nailed over a hole in a hurry can turn into a second problem. Michael plans the sealing so it holds against the animal and still sits neatly on the house.

What does Michael get called for most in The Woodlands?

  • Raccoons in the attic or chimney. Heavy walking over the ceiling at night, a soffit corner pushed in, chattering in the flue in spring. Details are on the raccoon removal in The Woodlands page.
  • Squirrels chewing the roof edge. Running in the attic in the morning and late afternoon, a fresh hole at the fascia board, a squirrel crossing from a limb to the same corner of the roof every day. See squirrel removal in The Woodlands.
  • Roof rats and mice. Quick scratching after dark, droppings in the attic or garage, a rat on the fence rail at dusk. See rat and mouse control in The Woodlands.
  • Snakes. In the garage, around the pool pump, in a bed of pine straw by the front door. See snake removal in The Woodlands.

Why is exclusion the answer in a town this wooded?

Here there is always another animal. Trap the raccoon in your attic and leave its hole open, and the greenbelt behind the house supplies the next tenant. The fix that lasts is exclusion: find every gap an animal used or could use, get the animals out, and close those gaps with galvanized mesh, metal flashing and solid vent covers. Michael lays out the whole method on the animal exclusion and live trapping page, and the animal exclusion in The Woodlands page shows how he fits that work to a house under covenant rules.

How Michael handles a job in The Woodlands

  1. Inspect. He walks the roofline, looks at which limbs reach the house, and checks the attic, the garage and the space under any deck.
  2. Get the animal out. Raccoons and squirrels leave through a one-way door or are caught in a cage trap. Rats are trapped on the paths they run. Snakes are removed with the right tools. Animals caught alive are removed and handled following Texas rules.
  3. Seal. Every opening is closed with material the animal cannot chew or pull apart, fitted tight to the trim.
  4. Repair and clean. Torn soffits and vents are put back, and soiled insulation is cleaned out.
  5. Talk about the trees. He points out the branches animals are using as a bridge so you can have them cut back.

Questions people ask about wildlife in The Woodlands

Does Michael work in every part of The Woodlands?

Yes. He takes calls from all over The Woodlands, on the Montgomery County side and the part that crosses into Harris County. He does the inspection and the work himself, so the person who looks at your roofline is the same person who seals it. Call him, tell him what you are hearing or seeing, and he will set a time to come out.

Why do I keep seeing raccoons in my Woodlands backyard?

Greenbelts and tall trees give raccoons cover and a road through the neighborhood, so seeing one at night is normal here. A raccoon in the yard is not the same as one in the house. Keep trash lids tight and bring pet food in at night. If you hear heavy walking over the ceiling or see a torn soffit, that is when to call Michael.

Will sealing my house change how it looks from the street?

Michael fits mesh and flashing tight to the roof edge and the trim so the work stays low and neat. Most of it sits behind vents or under the shingle line. Where a piece will show, he tells you before he installs it, so you can check the covenant rules that apply to your house if you need to.

Do the branches touching my roof really make a difference?

They do. A limb resting on the shingles is a walkway for squirrels, raccoons and roof rats, and in The Woodlands nearly every house has a few. Cutting them back makes the roof harder to reach. It does not replace sealing, since animals also climb downspouts and brick, but the two together make a house far less inviting.

Around The Woodlands: Places Our Customers Know

The Woodlands was built inside the forest, and that is what makes it beautiful. It is also why raccoons, squirrels, opossums and snakes are part of life here.

The Woodlands Children’s Museum

Families all over The Woodlands know the Children’s Museum at 4775 West Panther Creek Drive. The neighborhoods along Panther Creek back up to wooded green belts, and that is where trouble usually starts: something in the attic, under the deck or in the garage.

Spring Creek and the Greenway

The Woodlands sits just north of Spring Creek, the line between Montgomery and Harris counties, and the Spring Creek Greenway follows it for miles. Creeks and green belts are wildlife highways. If your home backs up to one, you are more likely to meet a raccoon or opossum, and keeping them out of the house is what we do.
